The portrait of this gentleman, Richard, was commissioned by a friend of his, a friend to whom he had given this hat. The man came to me and wanted me to paint a portrait of Richard wearing the hat. After a couple of photo sessions with the hat on, I was finally able to get the character of the man that I wanted to show. But when I wanted to call it a "skunkskin hat", Richard quickly let me know that skunks have 1 stripe, if it has 2 stripes it's a polecat.
